The United Labour Party of South Sudan Reflects on the Past and Calls for a New Era of Leadership
Juba, South Sudan
The United Labour Party of South Sudan (ULPOSS ) acknowledges the recent efforts by the current government to restore peace and stability in the country efforts that deserve recognition and appreciation. However, it is equally important to confront the uncomfortable truth: this crisis could have been entirely avoided.
The violent conflict that erupted in 2013, resulting in the deaths of over 400,000 people and the displacement of millions, was not inevitable. It stemmed from a political failure within the ruling party a failure to manage internal disagreements through dialogue, constitutional processes, and democratic institutions.
Instead of prioritizing peace, unity, and nation building, internal power struggles escalated into national tragedy. This avoidable conflict has inflicted deep wounds on our people and left lasting scars on our nation’s future.
The United Labour Party of South Sudan strongly believes that if it had been entrusted with leadership:
Internal disputes would have been addressed through the party’s constitution, respecting democratic norms and principles of accountability.
National decisions would have been driven by inclusive consultation and peaceful negotiation not by force.
The value of peace would have been placed above personal ambition, preserving unity and preventing needless bloodshed.
National resources would have been managed transparently, ensuring all South Sudanese benefit from independence not just a select few.
The ULP does not speak out of bitterness, but from a profound commitment to justice, unity, and a better future for every citizen. We believe South Sudan still holds great promise, but only if we embrace inclusive governance, constitutional rule, and people-centered leadership.
As we reflect on the lessons of the past, let us also look forward with courage and resolve. The time has come to put our people before politics and peace above pride. The United Labour Party of South Sudan remains committed to building a future founded on justice, equality, and democratic values.
We call upon all political stakeholders, civil society, and the international community to support a renewed vision for South Sudan one rooted not in conflict and division, but in unity, accountability, and hope.
Let us not repeat history. Let us write a new one together.
