Across our continent and particularly in east Africa , we continue to witness a troubling pattern leaders who cling to power decade after decade, claiming they were “born to lead.” Recently, an 86-year-old leader once again asked for votes, declaring his divine right to rule. But we must ask: is he the only person God created for leadership?
This mindset is dangerous and outdated.
Africa is full of intelligent, capable, and visionary young people. Our communities are not short of talent and they are short of opportunity. When one individual monopolizes leadership, they silence fresh ideas and block the path for a new generation to serve.
Leadership is not a lifetime appointment. It is a contract based on performance and trust. It should be measured by what a person has done for their people and do they improved healthcare? Education? Jobs? Infrastructure? Do they built institutions that outlast them? If the answer is no, then it’s time for change.
The people of east Africa and all across Africa deserve more than recycled promises and tired politics. We deserve leaders who bring development, create opportunity, and uplift communities, not those who treat power as personal property.
Elections were never meant to reward loyalty or seniority and they exist to offer choice, accountability, and progress. We must reject the politics of personality and instead embrace leadership that is rooted in service, vision, and results.
To the youth, to the elders, to every citizen: Africa must rise by choosing leaders based on impact, not age or legacy. The future belongs to those willing to build it.
Leadership is not about being born to lead, it’s about choosing to serve.
